Is it natural for a person to loose so much hair? i mean every time i run my fingers through bunches

Its crazy. A lot of hair falls out both when its wet like in the shower and when its dry. I straighten my hair and its insane how much hair i loose!!! is straightening my hair the problem? is that what is causing it?? i got a haircut today and the guy at the salon said it was like a phase or w/e.. hopefully he is right!!!! but is there any way i can minimize the shedding.. or perhaps stop it??

Yes, landhermit is correct to say that some hair loss is natural. We all lose an average of about 100 every day. That is a lot! But it would take over 7 years to lose all that you have. If you lose more than that, and it's not being replaced, then you may have other problems. Is your hair falling out or breaking off -- there is a difference.

Every hair only lives between 4-8 years. It then drops out, and in a few months, another hair grows from that follicle. They sometimes just never grow back, such as men get on top. But it rarely happens for women (hormonal thing) but they can get thinner as they age.

However, you say you straighten your hair (what ever for??). Yes, these chemicals or extreme heat will weaken your hair. If it is falling out by handfuls, then it is breaking off. That means you have destroyed the structural integrity of the hair, and there is nothing you can do now to repair it. You can only be gentle and wait until it grows longer. One good thing about our hair: it does keep on growing!

I've seen some people do horrendous things to their hair, in the chemicals they use, and how they handle their hair. If you can't be more gentle (and your hair is very fragile), then perhaps you should just keep it very short-- less fuss and bother. The less you do to your hair now, the better. Don't even TOUCH it.

NO NOT SO MUCH HAIR

Its not "falling out" your hair is breaking because you straighten it too much. When you dry your hair is it frizzy? The frizz is the result of the breakage. To minimize it calm down on the hair straightening do it 2xs a week at the most!

Mine was doing that too!! I hated it! And eventually I noticed that it had gotten sooooo thin.

I started using Nioxin which is for fine hair or to help with losing hair and it really seems to have thickened it up! But that's about all I've figured out so far!

Also, you could try blow drying your hair straight, it'll do less damage than a flat iron. But I don't think that is the reason for the hair loss, cause if it was just breakage, you'd atleast see the short little hairs. It might be from stress or something else, like medication!

Good Luck (:

Use Rogaine for the rest of your life. It works on men and women! :)

Don't overly use hats or things on your head. That makes hair fall out. Baseball players say that wearing caps all the time contributes to hair loss, especially in the shower.

What Is Hair Loss?

Most people routinely lose between 70 and 150 hairs from their scalp each day, mainly through washing, brushing, and combing.

Scalp hair starts to thin when more hairs are lost through normal shedding than the scalp is able to renew. About 40% of the density of scalp hair has to be lost before thinning of the hair becomes noticeable.

Hair loss can be caused by:

Heredity. Most balding is caused by a genetic predisposition - in other words, it's part of a person's genetic makeup. This is called male pattern baldness, or hereditary balding or thinning. It is the most common cause of thinning hair.

Illness, certain physical conditions, or their treatments. This can include high fever, thyroid disease, childbirth, inadequate protein in the diet, iron deficiency, cancer treatments, the use of certain medications, and other causes.

Hair may be lost in two ways:

In patchy hair loss, well-defined areas of hair are lost while the remaining scalp retains a good covering of hair.

In generalized hair loss, there is a uniform thinning over the entire scalp with no areas of normal hair growth.

The medical term for hair loss is alopecia. There are different classifications of alopecia:

Alopecia areata is a disease in which well-defined bald patches occur. It usually clears completely within 6 to 12 months without treatment.

Alopecia totalis is an uncommon condition in which all hair on the scalp is lost. The cause is unknown, and the baldness is usually permanent.

Alopecia universalis is a total loss of hair on all parts of the body.

Androgenetic alopecia is balding caused by heredity. It can affect both men and women, although women with this inherited tendency do not become totally bald. The condition can start in a person's teens, twenties, or thirties.
